Most of us know the salutation, “aloha.” And if you’ve seen Ms. Congeniality you might even know that, on the islands, aloha is used for both hello and goodbye. But what you might not know is that aloha is also a broader concept; a way of life. As my “A Little Book of Aloha” says, it encompasses the secrets of grace, well-being and happy disposition. Marvelous, really.
Much like the word aloha, yoga is also a way of life. A way of being. From your breath, to your thoughts, to your intentioned actions. When you practice Yoga, you live life through a lens of liberation of the self from the constraints of the material world; aligning yourself with the highest good. Which sounds pretty heavy and not so Aloha… but, the result is quite the same: grace, well-being and a happy disposition.
This summer we will be running a 7 class course of Yoga with the amazing Kelly Schulze of Village Yoga. One of the most marvelous things about Kelly’s practice and teaching is how she brings her Yoga off the mat and into her daily life. When I chat with her, I love her viewpoint. How she navigates the world. It is inspirational. Yet not intimidating. She’s pretty delightful.
Classes this summer will be small and intimate. Only six practitioners in our lovely little space. I think this is the perfect number. Such small groups allow for better direction and correction of postures. It also is a nice manageable group size for exploring the philosophy and deeper meaning of Yoga practice. I’m not sure what all will come out of this experience but I am certain that it will be amazing and memorable.
Classes are based around sun salutes with a different anatomical focus each week. After 60-minutes of movement you will enjoy 15 minutes savasana, or corpse pose. A full delicious 15 minutes of pure and blissful REST. And if you choose, Kelly will add Reiki to your savasana...It sounds so awesome that I am a little jealous…
